The Importance of Electrolytes

Electrolytes are particles that have a natural electrical charge when dissolved in water.  They are essential for all of our basic bodily functions including muscle and brain function, nerve support, fluid balance and a whole range of other important roles.

In terms of hydration, once a beverage has been consumed, its ability to remain within the body is determined in part by its electrolyte content. Sodium and chloride are the key electrolytes for maintaining blood volume (the amount of fluid content of the bloodstream); Potassium is a key contributor to whole-body hydration and other electrolytes such as magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus also contribute to whole-body hydration by providing an additional osmotic impetus to help the body’s cells hold onto the absorbed water molecules.  

Emerging research shows that ingesting a blend of electrolytes—a profile found in GoodSport®—which enhances overall hydration and provides more rapid and longer-lasting hydration. The improvement is due to the distribution of the electrolytes in both the intracellular (inside the cells) and extracellular fluid compartments (in the bloodstream and the fluid that bathes the cells).
